What to do on Exmoor

Porlock Weir Bluebell wood

A wide variety of interests awaits you on Exmoor, from the relaxing to the more strenuous activities.  Dulverton houses the Exmoor National Park Authority’s headquarters, and has an excellent visitor/information centre.  A new and exciting project this Summer is The Exmoor Pony Centre. Just one mile from Draydon, it offers a unique opportunity for visitors to meet the rare breed Exmoor pony at close quarters, and to ride them on Exmoor.  We often have our own ponies in the field at Draydon, next to the cottages.

The famous red deer of Exmoor can often be sited opposite the cottages – the resident herd live in the Barle Valley below.  We have a wide variety of wildlife and birdlife on our doorstep.  Regular sitings from the cottages include; bullfinch, goldfinch, jay, redstart, woodpecker, yellow hammer, siskin, dunnock, as well as birds of prey – buzzards are commonplace, and recently barn owl and red kite have been spotted in the vicinity.
Wonderful woodland Great walks

Exmoor offers superb photographic opportunities from rugged seascapes to beautiful landscapes throughout the seasons, as well as chocolate box cottages and interesting landmarks such as Tarr Steps, The Caractacus Stone and The Valley of The Rocks.  For those who prefer something more physical, Draydon Cottages provide an ideal base, with an abundance of walks to please all levels of fitness.

Dunkery Beacon

We have a good supply of recognised walks and cycle routes in the cottages, and for those enjoying water-based activities, fishing and canoeing are also available locally.  Many of the tourist towns are within easy reach – Lynton, Lynmouth,  Minehead, Ilfracombe and Tiverton are all accessible, as well as the pretty villages of Dunster, Porlock, Exford, Winsford and Selworthy.  Not forgetting the magical Lorna Doone Country.
